MASTER OF SCIENCE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science is a research based degree program being offered by Department of Computer Science at Islamabad, Karachi,Lahore, Peshawar,Multan,Gujranwala,Faisalabad and Sialkot. The program is designed to produce academicians and professionals of high quality throughout the country. Course work designed for MS in Computer Science provides a breadth based knowledge of the field whereas the specialization equips the students with in-depth knowledge of a specific area of computer science. Admission is offered during fall session every year.
DURATION
It is a two-year duration program spread over four semesters. Each semester has 18 weeks duration.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
16-year education i.e., BS in Computer Science/ BS in Information Technology/ Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons)/ Master of Computer Science/ Master of Information Technology/ M.Sc. (Computer Science) from a recognized institution. Computer Engineering (16-year education) candidates are also eligible from a recognized institution but have to cover deficiency courses. Candidate must have at least CGPA 2.50 out of 4 or first division wherein GPA system not implemented (Note: Limited seats are available on merit basis).
Each candidate is required to pass the NTS – GAT-General test (with minimum 50% marks). Candidate already qualified NTS-GAT-General has to attach attested photocopy of valid NTS result with their admission form.
For detailed information about NTS Test (GAT-General) visit NTS website http://www.nts.org.pk/GAT/GAT.asp . Virtual University of Pakistan arranges NTS Test (GAT-General) at the time of MS (CS) admission every Fall semester.
Note: The MSCS Program is available for applicants residing within Pakistan only and is not available for overseas students. If any student wishes to move overseas after gaining admission, he/she will be required to withdraw from the program.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDY PROGRESS
The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, online quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GMDBs), mid-term and final term examinations.
AWARD OF DEGREE
For the award of the Master of Science in Computer Science degree, a student is required to complete the 24-credit hours course work program and six-credit hour thesis research with minimum CGPA of 3.00 out of 4.

ADMISSION TO PROFESSIONAL SHORT CERTIFICATE COURSE(S)
The Virtual University has introduced Certificate Course(s) for professionals working in the industry as well as for the public at large. The purpose of these is to retrain professionals in new emerging areas of Science & Technology as well as provide the public with an opportunity to learn basic subjects which may be of general interest. Certificate Courses are offered in five disciplines: Computer Science, General Science, Humanities, Management and Mathematics.
DURATION:
Each Certificate Course comprised of one semester duration (18 weeks).
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Candidate can read, write and understand English language and there is no restriction on age, sex and educational qualifications. Candidate can apply for admission to maximum four (04) courses during a semester. However, students already enrolled in a Virtual University degree/diploma program are ineligible for admission towards certificate course(s).
EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL:
The University mail a package of educational material comprised of VU Info pack, Lecture handout, Lecture DVD’s to the admitted candidate. A student is allowed to change his/her enrolled certificate course within fifteen days after the commencement of semester by providing application (signed hard copy ) to Registrar, Virtual University of Pakistan, M.A Jinnah Campus, Defence Road, Off Raiwind Road, Lahore, Pakistan or at (certificateadmissions@vu.edu.pk). Such student is required to replace the received package (if already received) by mailing Lecture Handouts & Lecture DVD’s of the course along with payment of Rs.100/- as shipment charges to VU Bookshop (bookshop@vu.edu.pk) in order to receive new opted course material. However, overseas students are required to pay actual additional shipment charges for newly opted course.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDY PROGRESS:
The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, online quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GMDBs), mid-term and final term examinations.
AWARD OF CERIFICATE:
Each Certificate Course is of three credit hours (except Islamic Studies and Pakistan Studies). The earned course credit hours are transferable towards degree/diploma program of the University. Course Certificate would be awarded by VU Academic Department (professional_certificates@vu.edu.pk) to the candidate after successful completion of course work requirements.
FEE STRUCTURE
NOTE: In case a student leaves the university or apply for admission cancellation then university shall not refund any paid amount. However, fee to drop/freeze certificate courses is as under:
DROP/FREEZE OF SHORT CERTIFICATE COURSE:
University fee shall be charged upon enrollment in next semester in order to activate dropped course (s) or to continue next semester.

DURATION:
It is 2-Year full time study program spread over four semesters. Each semester has 18 weeks duration for teaching and examinations.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants for admission to all 2-year Bachelor Programs must have passed with at least 45% marks, Intermediate (Part I and II, or equivalent examination), or I.Com or ICS or DAE or ‘A’ level examinations. The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) ‘O’ levels and School Certificate (SC) examinations are considered equivalent to Matriculation, and the GCE ‘A’ levels is considered equivalent to the Intermediate examination. For the GCSE (‘O’) and SC examinations, grades in 6 subjects are considered. ‘A’ level candidates must have passed 3 subjects and required to provide equivalence from Inter Board Committee of Chairman (IBCC), Islamabad http://www.ibcc.edu.pk.
Admission application forms are same for 2-year and 4-year bachelor degree programs.
However, candidates having less than 45% marks will be eligible for admission after successful completion of “Zero Semester”.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDY PROGRESS:
The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GMDBs), mid-term and final term exams. The mid-term and final term exams are conducted at VU’s designated centers and usually count for 80 to 85% of the total marks for a course.
AWARD OF DEGREE:
To be eligible for the award of 2-Year Bachelors degree, the students are required to complete 60 credit hours with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.00 out of 4. The students after obtaining 2-Year degree can complete their 4-Year BS degree requirements at any time by successfully completing remaining minimum 72 credit hours in at least four semesters.

The courses are listed in a semester wise breakup. The courses may be revised from time to time as a result of continuous review conducted every term to bring them at par with courses being taught at top-class foreign universities. While reviewing the courses, needs of local industry and job market are also given full consideration.

The students after obtaining 2-year B.Sc. (Math., Stat., Econ.) degree will have an option to continue towards their selected 4-year BS program(s).

ALL PROGRAMS
The schedule for the payment of dues will be notified at the start of each semester. The fees will be deposited in the authorized bank branches by the date announced. If the candidate, once offered admission in a degree program, enrolls himself/herself by depositing university dues and subsequently leaves the university under any circumstances, the university dues already deposited by him shall not be refunded (except security fee under rules) in any case. Refund of tuition fee and other dues can be made to a student only if the University considers the student to be ineligible for the enrollment in a semester

Admission Schedule
Virtual University of Pakistan offers admission twice in an academic year namely spring in the month of January/February and fall in the month of August/September each year (except MSCS that is offered in every fall session).
Admission Procedure:
A candidate (Pakistani National) can obtain admission application form either from Virtual Campus or from VU website www.vu.edu.pk and apply for admission (subject to eligibility criteria) by submitting filled admission form with requisite documents including fee paid challan/Demand Draft (in original) to the nearest Virtual Campus or by mailing at Registrars’ Office (Admissions), Virtual University of Pakistan M.A. Jinnah Campus, Defence Road, Off Raiwind Road, Lahore.Tel: 111- 880 -880, Ext. 341 to 349.
Upon receipt of filled admission application form at Registrar’s office, it is processed within seven working days after necessary verification and candidate is intimated firstly through an email (if provided in admission application form). Secondly, via an email to his/her campus (incase campus based student) and finally, by mailing a hard copy admission offer letter and VU information material at his/her mailing address. A list of admitted candidates is also published and updated during admission session at VU website www.vu.edu.pk under admission link.
